Abbotsford Road Secondary
Modern and Ellergreen Secondary Modern were the only secondary schools
within the boundaries of the Norris Green estate. In 1948 Ellergreen became
a Technical High School and then in 1967 both schools merged to become
Ellergreen In the late 1980's the Abbotsford Road building became surplus to requirements as the former Queen Mary building on Long Lane was prefered. The building was taken over by Wellesbourne Junior school, which was forced to leave their own building for saftey reasons. The Abbotsford Road building was recently demolished to make way for new purpose built building for the junior school. The Ellergreen building lasted as a scholl until 1991, by this time it was being used for sixth-formers only. Shortly afterwards, it was demolished (apart from the sports hall) and the school, now based over at Long Lane, reverted back to the name Queen Mary. Today, Norris Green is without a secondary school. The Queen Mary School closed down recently, so the area relies on De La Salle and St. John Bosco schools in neighbouring Croxteth, or schools further afield such as Alsop, West Derby and Holly Lodge. The site of the Ellergreen building is now occupied by a health centre, a swimming baths as well as the school sports centre.
