12th August 2006

The Crown pub (now called Dickie Lewis's) has been severely damaged by fire, again. The building has been unoccupied for a couple of years now following a previous fire and was waiting to be refurbished. The fire, on the 9th of August, caused extensive damage to the third floor and roof space of the pub and according to the Liverpool Echo, the building could now be facing demolition. Such a shame that one of the few buildings of genuine architectural interest in the area could cease to exist.

Although no cause for the fire has yet been established, it is believed to have been started deliberately.

Some website related news: I've added a Stories and articles page to the site - a place where readers can submit their short stories as well as any non-fiction articles about Norris Green. So far, I've been sent two short stories by Eric Hall from Philadelphia (formerly of 53 Porchester Road). Eric's two stories, Off the Rails and The Owl Patrol are both tales from his childhood in Wartime Norris Green and I'm sure that you will find them a great read.

If you have written any stories or articles about Norris Green and you would like them added to this page, email them to administrator@sw-norrisgreen.co.uk. Your contributions will be credited to you.

Finally, Many thanks to Bill Dixon for sending me photgraphs of Broadway Baths and and St Christophers in the 1970's. I've added them to their respective pages.

I've updated the Pubs and Clubs page, adding photographs of several pubs, notably The Crown and The Broadway. I'll be adding more images over the next couple of weeks.

22nd July 2006

I've added more images on a number of pages, notably, on the Churches and Schools pages. I've also managed to add some information about Broadway Baths and the Norris Green Restaurant on the Gone but not forgotten page. With the kind help of several people, I have added more famous people from Norris Green to the People page.

I'm currently in the process doing a page for the pubs and clubs in and around the estate. Hopefully, I should have some images up of some o the pubs in the next couple of days.

25th April 2006

Due to work comitments I've been unable to update the site as much as I would have liked to lately. I've added some interactive maps to several pages as well as some new photographs; and I've put some new faces in the 'Famous People' section. I've also added a new page called Gone but not forgotton where I hope to add buildings that have been demolished.

Once again, Many thanks to everyone who has been kind enough to send me photographs and memories. Special Thanks to Howard Davies, Joe Owens, Phil Robertson and Keith McCartney.

I'm currently compiling information on the Norris Green Restaurant and the William Roberts Swimming Baths. I hope to add these to the site in the next couple of weeks.

7th January, 2006

As you can see, the site has now moved to a new space and under the new domain name: sw-norrisgreen.co.uk. I was beginning to run out of space on the old site - which meant that I had to limit what I could upload. With the new site I don’t have such restrictions, so I will be able to add many more images and hopefully, in the not too distant future, a message board and some film footage. In the meantime, I’ve added a number of new photographs throughout the site, so enjoy.

I spent Christmas with my family in Norris Green, so it gave me the opportunity to have a wander around the estate and to see the changes since my last visit. I was disappointed to see that there were no street decorations in Broadway for the festive period. A number of shops had put decorations up in their windows, but what the place really needed was some bright lights draped across the road and on street lamps. Other councils put Christmas decorations up in suburban shopping areas, so why can’t Liverpool City Council?

MerseytramSadly, the Merseytram project has collapsed. For those who don’t know about this, Merseytram’s aim was to return the trams to the streets of Liverpool for the 2008 Capital of Culture celebrations. This project would have been of great benefit to Norris Green as one of the proposed routes was to run through the area (along Utting Avenue East). For a long time people thought this was genuinely going to happen. However, the government decided to pull the plug on it, meaning that Norris Green and many other districts will miss out on the regeneration that the project sought to kick-start. I fear Norris Green will not see much of the 2008 celebrations and I’m also beginning to doubt whether ‘Capital of Culture’ will stretch beyond the boundaries of the City Centre.

Finally, on a (slightly) positive note, I noticed that a couple of ‘show homes’ are nearing completion on the Lewisham Road side of the Boot estate (near the junction with Utting Avenue East). Hopefully, it won’t take too long before we see the overdue reconstruction of this part of Norris Green.

13th October, 2005

I've added some photographs of Clubmoor Railway station to the Transport page and a couple of images to the Housing and People pages.

11th October, 2005

Utting Avenue EastIt's been while since I last updated the site. Many thanks for all your positive comments, bits of informtion and photographs. It has been of great help. I've updated the People page (I've added some memories of Wartime Norris Green and I have also listed some famous people who have come from the area).

Special thanks to those who helped me with some of the questions on my comments page. Notably, Laurie Haworth for providing me with information bout life events in 1941, Michael Quinn for sending me a picture of the old flats that were opposite the Strand (picture, left). Michael also provided me with a number of other images that I will add to the site over the coming days. Also I'd like to thank Audrey Seabrook and Dorothy Hughes for telling me about the Co-op Laundry and dry cleaners on Broad Lane that were on the site now occupied by the Pioneer Supermarket.

One last thing, I'll be visiting family in Norris Green at the end of October. I will be taking my trusty camera with me. So, if there is any streets or landmarks in the area that you would like me to take a photograph of, let me know and I will do so and add it to my site.
