Despite being the only cinema on the estate, competition for patrons was provided by the nearby Ritz Super Cinema on Utting Avenue, the Clubmoor on Townsend Lane and the Carlton in Tuebrook. In August 1955, the Regal closed for refurbishment. It was re-opened two months later by Liverpool F.C. legend, Billy Liddell. The film showing that day was Such Men are Dangerous starring Kirk Douglas. Due to the modernisation, seating capacity was reduced to 1,200, in order to create a two-tiered area at the rear of the cinema. Phil Robertson fondly remembers the day 'King Billy' visited the Regal: "I was one of the many people who watched Billy Liddell re-open the doors of the cinema. He took a penalty and shot into a makeshift goal they had set up at the front door of the building. In fact, if there are any photographs around of this event, I could even be on them as I was only a few metres away from King Billy when he 'scored' that day." In 1964, despite still being a popular venue for local cinema goers, the Regal switched to bingo. Today, the Regal is still a bingo hall and remains popular venue. Of an evening, the bright neon lights that illuminate the building, help the Regal retain some of its original charm. *The Dream Palaces of Liverpool. Harold Ackroyd
